Here at Cognacity, we are often asked about Performance Coaching and the benefits it can bring.

Performance coaching is one of the most impactful tools we offer to help individuals and teams reach their full potential. It’s not just about fixing problems—it’s about unlocking excellence. Jake Lovelock, one of our expert performance coaches, works with clients across a range of sectors to enhance focus, build resilience, and thrive under pressure. His approach is grounded in evidence-based psychology and tailored to each individual’s goals. Jake shares some of the most commonly asked questions about Performance Coaching:

What is Performance Coaching?
Performance coaching is about helping individuals become the best version of themselves by addressing the cognitive, emotional, and behavioural obstacles that get in the way of optimal functioning. It’s a service we’ve successfully applied in high-pressure environments, including Formula 1, the World Endurance Championship, Premiership Football and Rugby, the military, and professional services.

At Cognacity, we define performance coaching as the application of accredited psychological expertise to help individuals manage life’s demands and stressors more effectively. Our approach combines the evidence-based methods of clinical psychology with the performance mindset of elite sport. In a field that is largely unregulated, our niche lies in offering coaching delivered by accredited professionals with a proven track record of producing measurable improvements in demanding, high-profile settings.

What methods, techniques, or models do we use?
Our approach integrates methods from both clinical and performance psychology. From the clinical world, we draw on Cognitive Behavioural Coaching (CBC), third-wave therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Focused Therapy, and mindfulness-based strategies. From elite sport, we use techniques including peak performance profiling, arousal regulation, stress reappraisal and pre- and post-performance routines. We also draw on strategies for optimal energy management, such as sleep and circadian rhythm alignment.

Each coach brings a different emphasis depending on their training. Personally, I use a combination of ACT, CBC, and selected techniques from sport psychology, tailoring the approach to each individual’s needs, goals, and level of self-awareness. The flexibility of this approach allows us to support a wide range of clients—from those aiming for marginal gains in elite contexts to those struggling to function effectively under chronic pressure.

What kinds of problems can performance coaching help with?
Performance coaching can help with any internal obstacle that prevents someone from functioning at their best. Common areas include performance anxiety, self-imposed pressure, overthinking, perfectionism, low confidence, and difficulty recovering from setbacks. In other cases, the focus is more aspirational, with individuals seeking to get more out of themselves, build sustainable high-performance habits, or better harness their mindset.

The line between coaching and therapy is often discussed, particularly as many of the rules, beliefs, and behaviours we explore in performance coaching are similar to those addressed in therapy. Our coaches are equipped to navigate this overlap.

When is it appropriate to refer someone to a performance coach?
Performance coaching is particularly well-suited to individuals who have either completed therapy and are looking to continue building resilience and improving their performance, or who do not meet the clinical threshold for therapy but would benefit from psychological input to support their performance, mindset, or functioning. It provides a valuable next step or standalone option for those navigating high-pressure environments, pursuing ambitious goals, or seeking to get the most out of themselves without the need for clinical treatment.
