Overview of Psychotic Disorders

Psychotic disorders are serious mental conditions which cause individuals to experience abnormal thinking and perceptions. Psychotic episodes can come on where an individual loses touch with reality and can become confused about what is real and what isn’t. The two most common symptoms of psychotic disorders are delusions and hallucinations. Delusions are strongly-held beliefs even though they are unrealistic or untrue from a rational outlook. A hallucination is the perception of something that is not there. A common example is hearing voices. Hallucinations and delusions can cause abnormal thinking, emotions, and behaviour.
