Dr Estelle Laughton is a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist and Medical Psychotherapist with more than 20 years of experience in the NHS. Her most recent NHS consultant post was in a Complex Emotional Needs Service in London. She provides expert psychiatric assessments, can prescribe and monitor medication but is also a skilled practitioner in many types of psychological therapy with an expertise in tailoring psychological treatments and matching individuals with appropriate therapists. She believes a lot can be accomplished alongside the framework of medication. Having been in therapy herself as part of training as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, she is passionate about understanding the whole person in the broader context of their lives in making holistic, individualised plans to improve mental wellbeing.
She has a wealth of experience in helping people explore the complicated links between mood disturbance, emotional and relationship difficulties, trauma and loss and the impact of family discord and divorce during development. She also has expertise in how physical health and neurodiversity overlaps with mental health and in women’s health, having worked in A&E, liaison psychiatry and in a clinic for Medically Unexplained Symptoms.
Outside of her work with Cognacity, Estelle is the Joint 2024-2025 Course Director for the University College London, Royal College of Psychiatry Membership Exam Training Course. In her leisure time Estelle enjoys wild swimming, skiing and immersing herself in nature in the company of family and friends.
