Memory Assessment
Specialist assessment for changes in memory and thinking
Changes in memory or thinking can be concerning for individuals and their families. Our consultant-led Memory Assessment provides a comprehensive evaluation to help identify possible causes and clarify whether further investigation, treatment or monitoring may be appropriate.
The service is available to people aged 65 and over at our Welbeck Street and Beaconsfield clinics.
Who is it for?
This service is for people who have noticed changes in their memory, thinking or ability to manage everyday activities. It may also be appropriate where family members or others close to the individual have noticed changes.
Attending a memory assessment does not mean that dementia will necessarily be diagnosed. Changes in memory and thinking can have different causes, and some clients will not require further appointments or investigations following their initial assessment.
What is included?
The pathway begins with a 90-minute, face-to-face assessment with a Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist. This includes:
- A detailed history of memory and cognitive concerns
- Information from a family member, partner, friend or another person who knows the client well, wherever possible
- A review of current and previous medication, recent blood-test results and relevant medical history
- Consideration of day-to-day functioning and any changes in ability
- A mental state examination and cognitive assessment
- A physical examination where clinically appropriate
- A working formulation and discussion of recommended next steps
Before the appointment, clients will be provided with two short questionnaires. These should be completed by a family member, partner, friend or another person who knows the client well wherever possible.
What happens next?
Depending on the findings, the psychiatrist may recommend:
- No further assessment
- Relevant blood tests through the client’s GP
- A private MRI or CT brain scan
- A feedback appointment to discuss the findings
- Medication where clinically appropriate
- Lifestyle recommendations that may support cognitive health
- Ongoing monitoring or follow-up
If medication is commenced, follow-up appointments will usually be recommended to assess tolerability and adjust the dose where appropriate.
