Family Nutrition Support for Adolescent Eating Disorders
Specialist nutrition guidance for young people and their families
Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that commonly develop during adolescence. They can affect nutrition, weight, growth and puberty, bone health, digestion, concentration, academic performance and wider physical development.
This structured package provides personalised nutrition support for adolescents with a diagnosed eating disorder. It is designed to help young people work towards meeting their nutritional needs through oral intake while giving parents and carers practical guidance and support.
Who is it for?
This package is for adolescents aged 13 to 18 who have been diagnosed with an eating disorder and require support with nutrition, eating or food choices.
This may include young people with:
- Anorexia nervosa
- Bulimia nervosa
- Binge-eating disorder
- Pica
Where appropriate, sessions can be attended jointly by the young person and their parent or carer. This collaborative approach can help families introduce changes more effectively and create a more consistent and supportive environment around food and meals.
What is included?
The six-session package includes an initial comprehensive nutritional assessment followed by five personalised sessions. Depending on the young person’s needs, support may include:
- Individual nutritional guidance
- Practical support with eating and food choices
- Personalised meal plans where appropriate
- Recommendations to help meet nutritional requirements
- Guidance for implementing changes at home
