Dr Sarah Keen is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with a broad range of experience and knowledge from the 15 years that she has been offering mental health assessment and treatment. This has largely been within the NHS, but most recently she has worked within the charity and private sectors also. She is registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and is a Chartered Member of The British Psychological Society (BPS).
Following her doctoral training, she has kept up-to-date through much personal and professional development. This enables her to work with many different types of difficulty and to utilise a variety of different modes of therapy, in particular Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Systemic Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness based approaches, which she can then tailor to the individual needs of each client. That said, her greatest passion in her work is for Compassion Focused Therapy – a ‘third wave’ therapy, blending ideas from evolutionary psychology with the latest understanding from the neuroscience literature. This approach offers a ‘humanist’ way of conceptualising mental distress, and can be used to support and inform individuals or couples who present with all sorts of personal challenges in their lives. This way of working embodies Sarah’s own beliefs about the beauty, but also the struggles, of being human, and helps direct us to how we might best heal and strengthen ourselves and each other.
In addition, Sarah has extensive specialist experience of trauma focused work and has worked with both perpetrators and survivors of significant crimes. She has also worked with military veterans, and understands the unique challenges of repatriation to a ‘normal’ life after significant traumas and distancing.
