Prof Pieter Kruger is a registered clinical psychologist, the Director of International Operations for Cognacity UK and Director of Institute of Psychology & Wellbeing (IPW) at the North-West University (NWU), South Africa.

Education

Pieter received his B.A. degree (Psychology & Human Movement Science) Cum Laude from the North-West University in 1999, followed by a B.A. Honours in Sport Science (Cum Laude) in 2000, a B.A. Honours in Psychology (Cum Laude) in 2001 (NWU) and his M.A. in Clinical Psychology (Cum Laude) from the University of the Free State, South Africa in 2003. He continued with a PhD thereafter at North-West University, which he received in 2006. Specialising further in mood and anxiety disorders, Pieter completed an advanced certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Psychology at the Albert Ellis Institute, New York, NY (Chartered by New York State University) in 2007.

Career

As a registered clinical psychologist Pieter has been working in elite performance psychology for the past 15 years. He moved to the UK at the start of 2006, where he worked as a specialist clinical psychologist at the Nightingale Hospital in central London for two years, before becoming a founding director of Cognacity Ltd.

In parallel, as an academic, Pieter was a senior lecturer at London Metropolitan University from 2008 to 2012 on the MSc and Doctorate programmes in Cognitive and Counselling Psychology. He has also been a visiting professor at University College London (UCL) Medical School in the Division of Surgery & Interventional Sciences since 2011 to present, lecturing on the MSc programme in sports medicine. He is also currently an associate professor of clinical psychology at the Institute of Psychology & Wellbeing at North-West University.

On the elite sport side Pieter was a LOCOG specialist psychologist for the London 2012 Olympic Games, working with the GB Track & Field team, as well as team GB Rowing. He has worked in English Premier Football with individuals from Chelsea FC (2009/10) and Arsenal FC (2011-2015) on performance and clinical aspects. He was the performance psychologist for the London based Harlequins Premiership Rugby team (2006-2015; European Challenge Cup Champions, English Premiership Champions, LV Cup Champions), Lions Currie Cup and Super Rugby (2014-2015) and the South African Springbok Rugby team (Rugby World Cup Bronze medal winners 2015).

Pieter also serves on the Medical Consultancy Advisory Board for Health Response UK, with a main focus on managing stress, anxiety and mood related mental health challenges within organisations. He is currently working with various Blue Chip and FTSE50 companies to facilitate performance under pressure in a high pressure work environments.

Professional registration

Pieter is currently a registered Clinical Psychologist (PS 0085642) with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), a Chartered Psychologist (No 208616) and associate fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS), a registered Clinical Psychologist (PYL06673) with the Health Professions Council (HPC) United Kingdom, as well as a registered EuroPsy Psychologist with the European Federation of Psychological Associations (EFPA).
